Enhancing the capacity of Vocational Training Institutions in Refugee and Host Communities to deliver inclusive TVET Programs

01/01/2025 to 12/31/2027

Over the last decade, Uganda has made significant progress in skilling the youth population to improve their labour market outcomes, livelihood, and well-being. Yet there is still an urgency to address this issue, particularly in refugee and host communities (RHCs), where the difficulties youth face are pronounced. This lack of access spreads their marginalisation, hindering their ability to rebuild their lives and contribute to their well-being. Inclusive TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) for refugees revolves around creating an enabling environment that ensures equal access to education and skills training opportunities for refugees and host community members.
The RiTE project will aim to address the challenges faced by refugees in accessing quality Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) opportunities in East Africa, specifically in Uganda, focusing on three (3) Refugee Hosting districts, namely Kampala, Arua, and Adjumani out of the 13 Refugees Hosting Districts. The RiTE project will select and work with one Vocational training Institute in each Refugee Hosting District. While this activity is an initiative in selected RHCs, it can scale up into RHC-wide operations across Uganda and other African Countries once the proposed interventions have been validated through this project. By promoting inclusive TVET, the project seeks to enhance the capacity of vocational training institutions in refugee and host communities to support the integration and empowerment of refugees, enabling them to acquire relevant skills and knowledge for sustainable livelihoods as well as supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4.4, by removing obstacles to education and promoting accessible, quality TVET for everybody. The project will also collaborate with local stakeholders, including educational institutions, refugee support organisations, and employers, to ensure the successful implementation and sustainability of the initiative.
The main objective of the RiTE project is to enhance the capacity of vocational training institutions in refugee and host communities of Kampala, Arua, and Adjumani districts to deliver inclusive TVET Programs. The project aims to equip refugees with marketable skills that can lead to sustainable employment opportunities by providing them with quality vocational training.

The RiTE Project outcomes
The RiTE project aims to achieve the following outcomes by December 2027:
1. Enhanced capacity of TVET institutions, facilitators, and trainers to deliver inclusive education to refugees.
2. Increased access to inclusive TVET programs for refugees, thus leading to improved educational opportunities.
3. Enhanced employability of refugees through the acquisition of the relevant skills and competencies.
4. Improved livelihoods and economic empowerment of refugees through sustainable employment support.
5. Established partnerships between TVET institutions, employers, and industry stakeholders to facilitate refugee job placement.
By achieving these outcomes, the RiTE project will contribute to TVET's institutions capacity to deliver inclusive TVET programs for refugees. This will contribute to refugees' overall well-being and self-reliance, enabling them to rebuild their lives and actively participate in the host community's development.
